Did you ever set a goal and then sort of … demolish it without realizing it? That has happened this year. I set some goals to speak more regularly, as in once a month. That has translated into some rather interesting stats. This year my speaking engagement history looks like this.. 45 out of the last 52 weeks with a speaking engagement 45 sessions to over 3000 people in the last 12 months 45 Sessions over 21 different cities and 20 Virtual Events Averaging more than 5 sessions per month over the...

This post is the first in a new weekly series meant to give my readers some insight into my week. Many of you inquire as to what life is like in the glamorous world of Pragmatic Works and so I am out to remind you it’s very much like your job. I have clients and so do you. I have deadlines and so do you. I typically work with a dog sleeping on my foot. Well, that one might be different. I also have one of the highest emails set from Atlanta airport ratios in the country. Something I’m not entire...

Goor Morning folks ! It's time for another motivational Monday. Today I want to remind you to be careful about biting off more than you can chew, especially if you've had more to drink than you should have. In many cases we find ourselves needing to get ramped up quickly to take on a new project or responsibility. This is important since it's how we in the field push ourselves to always be better. What you want to avoid though is biting off more than you can chew. Try and find a mentor or comuni...
Today's motivation is that you had nothing to do with this. IF this Pilot had the equivalent of a community as strong as the one for SQL Server, he could have gotten a handy tip, like don't put all your files on one drive, or don't defrag your databsae in the middle of the day or perhaps more appropriate, don't try to loop into a landing after 3 scotches in the airport lounge. My advice to you this week is get out there and see waht the community can do for you thi week, so that you can give bac...
In life, many times we get confused by symbols or indicators that we make assumptions about. You know what they say about folks who make assumptions. Yes, they are making assumptions. Enough about those people. Typically we want to make sure that if we're designing a data wareouse, report, dashboard, or single engine aircraft that we note items in the way the public or our customers would like to see them. This means getting feedback so they don't think that AC means bacon. Yes you know this cou...
This week it's all about speed. Many thing in life are drive n by how fast we can get them done. Fast food, fast cars, fast toasters, even fast requirements gathering. Let this be a reminder to not play requirements gathering fast and loose or you may find yourself in the unfortunate position of having to prop your turtle (application or database) up on a skateboard (hastily modified code or hack) to get it to move from A to B. Not a good scenario. Does this guy look comfortable? I think not.
Well SQL Saturday here in South Florida was QUITE an event this past weekend. We had over 400+ attendees and some fantastic sessions. I really enjoyed the sessions I got to see including some cool stuff on partitioning by Elijah Baker and some cool SSIS work by Mike Mollenhourand Mike Davis. Brent Ozar and Tim Ford gave the keynote which I thought was great, even through I left in the middle due to the strong lack of AC until 9am. It was a great message though about getting out there are improvi...
