If you’ve ever built an SSIS package that utilizes the Microsoft Jet Driver for an Access or Excel data source or a package that executes a SQL 2000 DTS package, you know that you must set the Run64bitRunTime property in the SSIS project properties to False. This stinks if you’re executing these kinds of child packages from a master package that also executes child packages are not required to execute in 32 bit mode. Dry your eyes, my friend, because there is a work around for this. You can down...

Yesterday, I was working on a project in which I have to load data from a csv file that has no column headers. The column headers I need are in an Excel file and are listed in a column. This is very irritating because I needed to create the tables with the data. I wasn’t sure how to get them into my data as column headers and I didn’t want to have to hand type hundreds of column names. Many blog posts suggested setting up pivot tables, but that wasn’t working out to well for me. Plus, it kept so...

The indicators that are available in SQL 2008R2 adds great visualizations to your reports. I was recently building an SSRS demonstration and I stumbled upon an additional feature that makes the indicator even more visually appealing. Using a not so obvious property of the indicator you can set its size. The value must be between 0 and 1 or an expression that results in a value between 0 and 1. To change the size of an indicator, ensure that you have selected the indicator that you want to resize...

Over the week end, I was working on a webinar for Report Builder 3.0 and ran into a problem. For some reason, Report Builder could not see any of my data sources. If I clicked the option to browse for my data sources, I couldn’t choose where to browse. I assumed that at some point, something had gone wrong with my settings and the path to my report server was removed. I don’t use report builder very often, so it took me a while to figure out what was happening. I realized there was a link at the...

A couple of days ago my manager asked whether there is a way to convert appointments recorded in outlook into a report so that the data need not be double handled. I thought there should be some sort of an export option provided in outlook and started exploring the menus in outlook. There I found under the File menu an option called Import and Export as shown below. I chose the export to file option as shown below. I them chose the csv for windows option as shown below. In the next screen I chos...

This might be useful if you have a lot of series in your groups and you need to maximize your real estate on your chart. Or maybe you have an area chart type in the background that you can’t read because the columns are so wide. Below I will show you a very easy process of how to adjust the column widths in your SSRS chart. This first image shows you the default width of the bar chart. To adjust the width simply select the appropriate series and go to the properties pane and drill down into the ...

Ok, so what have I been up to? Well a lot has changed for me over the past couple of months, primarily my job. Initially I wasn’t going to blog about this, but after a couple of conversations with a few well respected people in the SQL community I decided to write a post. As many of you know I was a Business Intelligence Architect for Pragmatic Works, which was a great position. That job catapulted my career into orbit, literally. However, with the fast-paced I kind of lost myself. I was given s...
A question that I have been asked quite often is, “How can I change the Report Server that I am connected to in Report Builder?” I never really thought about it until then. To change the connection click the Disconnect link located at the bottom of the Report Builder Designer: Once you click it you will be allowed to re-connect using the Connect link: You will then be presented with the Connect to Report Server dialogue window: In dropdown list labeled Report server type the URL of the Report Se...
We are on day 4 of Tech Ed 2011, having a great time. Our booth is getting pretty good traffic, with the usual throng of "give me a FREE something" people, but also a lot of very focused visitors who seek us out regarding Business Intelligence. Many of them are DBA's who are being tasked with wearing more hats beyond working with the database, and also beyond the usual reporting. I'd have to say that the biggest buzzwords on their lips are Sharepoint and Powerpivot. Many of them are saying that ...

UPDATED. The original post of this blog somehow dropped over half the content. It is updated, and complete now. I apologize for the problem. Thanks for reading. I ran into a problem the other day where the requirement was to add several interactive sort options to a report. The report was a bit large and took more than just a second or two to run. Therefore each click of an interactive sort button took some time to run as well, decreasing the quality of the user experience. Then came the “can we...
I want to thank everyone for attending my session on data mining in Excel 2007. As promised here is the link to the website where you can download the database. http://baseball1.com/statistics/ It is available for download in 2 formats: 1. Access Database format. In this format it was quite easy to run the upsert wizard and place it in a SQL Server Database. 2. CSV Format Here is the query for the main table that I used to run most of the algorithms: CREATE View [dbo] . [BattingStats] as with Ma...
I haven’t been this excited about a new software release since I stopped playing World of Warcraft a couple of years ago. The reason for this is because I actually helped develop a new feature inside of BIxPress. The new Runtime Standard Deviation Report was something I was working on for a client that I thought would be a great addition to BIxPress. I was working with a client who asked me to come up with a way of notifying them if a package ran for longer than normal. Since this client had alr...
Yesterday was the first day of the SQL Rally conference in Orlando, FL. It was a great first day because I was able to be part of delivering a full day pre conference seminar. Patrick LeBlanc, Adam Jorgensen, Mike Davis and I did an End to End BI workshop that covered: Data Modeling SSIS SSAS SSRS SharePoint BI I know it’s a lot of material but the goal was to give the attendees a taste of the entire BI stack while solving a specific business problem. It was our own special form of Infotainment ...
